How long your fridge really stays cold — and the battery math that keeps it running

The USDA says four hours. Your fridge says otherwise. Here is what actually happens hour by hour, and the surprisingly small battery it takes to never find out.

The number everyone repeats is four hours. That is the USDA's guidance for an unopened refrigerator, and it is good advice — but it is a floor, not a forecast. It assumes a worst case so that nobody gets sick following it. What actually happens in your kitchen depends on three things the guidance cannot know: how full your fridge is, how warm your house gets, and how many times somebody opens the door to look at food they have already decided not to eat.

What is happening inside, hour by hour

A refrigerator is not cold because it is running. It is cold because of thermal mass — the food, the liquid, the air. When the power dies, the compressor stops but the mass keeps holding. A packed fridge coasts for six to eight hours in a 70°F house. A half-empty one, closed, gets you closer to four or five. A freezer that is genuinely full will hold safe temperatures for 48 hours; half full, about 24.

Then the door opens. Each opening dumps roughly a third of the cold air, and in a running fridge that costs you a few minutes of compressor time. In a dead one, it costs you cold you cannot get back. This is the part people underestimate: two or three casual openings do more damage in hour five than the entire preceding four hours did.

The line that matters is 40°F. Above it, bacteria multiply on a curve, and the two-hour rule applies — food held above 40°F for more than two cumulative hours should go. Not “smell it and decide.” Go. The unpleasant truth about a long outage is that the freezer is usually fine and the fridge is usually the loss.

The math that makes this a non-problem

Here is what surprises people: a refrigerator is a small load. A modern Energy Star unit pulls somewhere between 100 and 200 watts while the compressor runs — but it does not run continuously. Duty cycle in a normal house is 30-40%, so real consumption lands around 1 to 1.5 kWh per day. Not 4.8 kWh, which is what you would get if you took the nameplate 200W and multiplied by 24.

That distinction is the whole ballgame. At 1.2 kWh/day, a 1kWh battery runs your fridge for roughly 20 hours. A 2kWh unit gets you through a day and a half. A 3.6kWh unit like the EcoFlow Delta 3 Plus covers a fridge for two to three days on its own — and it has the surge headroom to start the compressor, which is the other half of the problem.

Because compressors surge. A fridge that runs at 150W can pull 600-1,200W for the fraction of a second its motor starts. Any unit you buy needs to swallow that spike without tripping. Every power station we track handles a fridge start; that stops being true when you add a sump pump or a well pump to the same battery.

The cheap trick that buys you hours: fill the empty space. Jugs of water, in the fridge and the freezer, cost nothing and add thermal mass. A packed freezer stays below freezing twice as long as a half-empty one, and frozen jugs moved into the fridge compartment during an outage act as a free ice box.

What we would actually buy for this

If the fridge is the whole reason you are shopping, you do not need a 5kWh flagship. You need about 2kWh, a real 1,500W+ inverter, and LFP chemistry so the thing still holds charge in year eight. That is a $600-900 purchase, not a $3,000 one.

Where it gets more expensive is when the fridge is the excuse and the real list is fridge + Wi-Fi + phones + a few lights + the furnace blower in January. That is a legitimately different machine. Most people who lose a fridge of food to an outage do not lose it because they bought the wrong battery. They lose it because they did not have one, and the outage was longer than the forecast said. The fix is boring and it is cheap and it is a $700 box in a closet. Two days of groceries costs more than that in a lot of households.
